General Tips & Techniques:

*Be sure to keep your yarn tension firm and consistent throughout your work.

*At the end of each row, I have given the number of stitches you should have. This is just a guide. If you are off by 1 or 2 stitches, don't worry about it. Amigurumi is very forgiving.

Magic Ring:

Leaving a long tail, ch. 4 and join with sl st into first ch to form a ring. Work 10 sc into the center of the ring and around the tail, do not join. Pull the tail to close the hole in the ring. Tie the tail to your working yarn. Mark the beginning of the row (a piece of contrasting yarn or paperclip work fine). From this point on, you will be working in the round.

Sam the Skater Crochet Pattern:

Beginning at top of head:

Row 1:Using skin color, create Magic Ring as above, 10 st.

Row 2: 2 sc in each sc around, 20 st.

Row 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, 30 st.

Rows 4-7: 1 sc in each sc around, 30 st.

Row 8: *1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, 39 st.

Rows 9-10: 1 sc in each sc around, 39 st.

Row 11: *1 sc in next 3 sc, sc next 2 together*, repeat from * to * around, 30 st.

Row 12: 1 sc in each sc around, 30 st.

Attach safety eyes or embroider the face at this point. Eyes are positioned in row 8, 4 sc apart. Also add hair now if weaving it in the inside of the head.

Hair tip: If attaching Sam's hat to her head, you can simply attach the yarn hair to the top of her head like I did. To do that, cut approximately 75 strands of yarn 7 inches (18 cm) long. Using your crochet hook, pull one strand of the hair through the top of the head from front to back in the 2nd row of the head. This strand will be used to tie the hair to Sam's head. Keeping this strand flat against the head from front to back, lay the rest of the yarn hair across it going from side to side. Pick up both sides of the single strand of yarn and tie the hair to the head. Spread the hair all around the head and cut a few bangs (fringe) if desired. Attach her hat over the hair.

Chin and neck shaping:

Row 13: 1 sc in next 6sc, *sc next 2 together, 1 sc in next 2 sc*, repeat from * to *within 6 stitches of the end of the row. 1 sc in next 6 sc. 26 st.

Row 14: 1 sc in next 6 sc, *sc next 2 together, 1 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * to within 6 stitches of the end of the row. 1 sc in next 6 sc. 22 st.

Rows 15-16: 1 sc in each sc around, 22 st.

Body shaping:

Row 17: Change to shirt color. *1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, 29 st.

Rows 18-21: 1 sc in each sc around, 29 st.

Row 22: Change to pant color. 1 sc in each sc around, 29 st.

Rows 23-24: 1 sc in each sc around, 29 st.

Leg shaping:

Row 25: Skip next 14 st, 1 sc in next 15 st. One leg made, 15 st.

Rows 26-27: Continuing around the leg you just made, 1 sc in each sc around, 15 st.

Row 4: *1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, 36 st.

Skateboard:

Row 3: 1 sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, 1 sc in next 11 sc. Join with sl st and end, weave in the end.

Cut a piece of felt the size of the skateboard you just crocheted, making sure to hold your crocheting flat to get the right shape. Sew the 4 plastic beads to the bottom of the skateboard as shown. Using a needle and thread, sew the felt to the top of the skateboard as grip tape.

Finishing:

Stuff the head, body, and legs firmly. Attach bottoms of feet.

Stuff arms and sew the tops of the arms closed. Attach them to the body as shown.

Sew hat to the head.

Weave in all ends. To weave in a long piece of yarn, attach the yarn needle and push the needle through the amigurumi's body, pulling it out the other side. Pull the yarn tightly and cut. That will hide it in the body.

Enjoy your new Skater!
